Okay, I know that Hiro Mashima seems determined to make Edens Zero darker and edgier than his previous works. But now it seems like he’s just determined to put the heroes through the ringer as many times as possible. First, Rebecca jumped to the future to learn she’s in a coma and lost her legs. Then, she wakes up to find that Lyra of the Ocean’s 6 has her dressed like a bunny girl and forced to play a card game in front of a live audience. And now, we find out just how bad things will get for her if she loses. And they are bad!
Weisz Kicks it into Overdrive, and Makes Iron Man Proud
I’m not sure if I’ve ever told you guys this, but I think that Weisz’s superhero alter ego, Arsenal, reminds me a lot of Iron Man. Think about it: Weisz and Tony Stark are both mechanical geniuses and playboys; albeit Tony has more luck with women than Weisz does. They both continually upgrade their armor to help them fight evil. And, in the most recent example, they fight enemies using giant mech suits. Weisz kicks it into Overdrive in his fight against Nasseh, and he would make Iron Man proud!
What the Heck Happened to Rebecca’s Legs?!?!?!?
It may be because I’m revisiting the story thanks to the anime, but I’m only now realizing just how dark and messed up Edens Zero can be. Every arc in the story has had at least one moment that could be considered completely messed up. And if I’m being honest, I’m still haunted by Drakken Joe killing Shiki, as well as Muller’s torturing of Jinn and Sylph. However, I think I may have just found another seriously dark moment in the series thus far, and it has to do with Rebecca.
The Eye of Horus Messes With All!
The more I read Edens Zero, the more I find myself being reminded of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Think about it. A lot of the Ether Gear used by people can be on the bizarre side. Laguna can turn people into water when they cry. Milani of the Ocean’s 6 has that mirror world gear. And now we have Nasseh with his Ether Gear, the Eye of Horus. Which can somehow hypnotize people into acting however he wants. The Eye of Horus may end up being the gang’s toughest challenge yet.
Powerful Emotions Rampant in new Edens Zero
Emotions can be a very powerful tool. When one learns to channel their emotions properly, they can find themselves achieving things that would otherwise be impossible. If you’re a Shonen protagonist, strong emotions can lead to unlocking a new level of power, and thus, beating the snot out of villains. However, they can also impede one’s progress. In this case, Shura and the Oceans 6 start using the heroes emotions against them.
It’s Official: Shura is a Sadistic Monster!
It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: Shura is an absolute monster right now. He may end up changing for the better in the future of Edens Zero, but right now, he’s an absolute monster. He treats his followers like garbage, plans to commit machine genocide, and has decided to do everything in his power to break Shiki. This week, things for Shiki go from bad to worse, as Shura ups the ante. And threatens the lives of the Shining Stars in the process.
Homura’s Inner Fox Spirit Awakens! The Power of Overdrive!
Super Saiyan, Tailed Beast Mode, Dragon Force, Second Gear, Overdrive. It seems like a prerequisite for a lot of Shonen manga to give the heroes some sort of super-powered form. Edens Zero established one some time ago in the form of Overdrive, and Shiki’s already attained it. However, this chapter of Edens Zero sees another hero reach that status. Amidst her fight against the first of the Ocean’s 6, Homura awakens Overdrive, and her inner fox spirit!

I seem to recall a while back comparing some of the fights in Edens Zero to that of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. By that, I meant that they could follow rules that broke the fighting norms in the Shonen genre. Laguna being able to people into water if they cry? That is bizarre, no pun intended! However, I never expected that they would use the concept of the mirror world here. And Homura’s stuck right in the middle of it!
