Rick and Jerry Episode is Fortune Crazy!

Rick and Morty S6, Ep 5 Review
Rick Sanchez and Jerry Smith are about as opposite as people can get. One’s a cynical super genius that can do anything he wants, and the other’s a well-meaning but bumbling normal guy. Both don’t like each other that much, but when paired together, they’re fun to watch. Maybe even more so than Rick and Morty. And in the latest Rick and Jerry episode, the two fight against fate…thanks to a fortune cookie that says Jerry will do something beyond cringe.
Jerry No Sex Mom
Let’s just cut to the chase: the Smith family’s eating at Panda Express when they get some fortune cookies. For most people, fortune cookies are pointless. However, Jerry’s says something horrible: “you will have sex with your mother.”
Jerry, being Jerry, is understandably freaked out about it, and his family’s teasing doesn’t help. Given how stressed out I get about some things, I understand Jerry’s plight. Especially given how Morty and Summer took things too far.

Ironically, it’s Rick, of all people, that sympathizes with Jerry’s plight. While the rest of the family goes to a zoo, Rick and Jerry investigate why the latter got this weirdly specific fortune.

What follows next has to be seen to be believed, but it turns out, Jerry was right to be worried.
Rick and Jerry Find Out Fate’s Exploited
It turns out, there’s a Fortune 500 (that’s literally its name!) company that writes fortunes for fortune cookies that come true. No matter how improbable or reality-defying they are. Worse, not even Rick can stop them, so their infiltration of the company (with Jerry using the Sailor Moon transformation) goes south fast.

The Rick and Jerry adventure gets weirder from there. The company CEO built the entire thing off an alien that crash-landed in her backyard. The creature digests entropy, and its digestive issues make it poop out fortune cookies that manipulate fate to come true, no matter how crazy or stupid they. And the cookiesmith sent out random, incredibly specific fortunes like “you will have sex with your mom,” as a cry for help. And they’re the first people to actually come looking.
That implication alone is scarier than the fact that Jerry comes close to having sex with his Mom. Not helped by the fact that the CEO brings his clueless mom there to fufill his fortune and negate his immortality. That’s how powerful the fortunes are!
Thankfully, it turns out that Rick is one of the people that can fight fate. Or at least manipulate it to his advantage. In the episode’s climax (no pun intended), he uses the cookies to turn the tables on the company, kill the CEO, and get rid of the fate-crapping alien beast. Oh, and he saves Jerry from being traumatized, no thanks to his Mom. Rick and Jerry episode for the win.

Rick and Jerry Ultimate Oddball Duo
Every time we see Rick and Jerry go on their own adventure, it feels like the show’s running on all cylinders; in other words, hilarious. Despite not liking each other (or so they say), the two have a good dynamic. They may not get along most of the time, but they do seem to respect each other enough to do amazing stuff when it comes down to it. If they didn’t, then why would Rick stop Jerry from having sex with his Mom?
What puts this above other Rick and Jerry episodes is that it lacks a B-Plot with the rest of the family. We don’t even see the Smiths until the post-credits stinger in what has to be the weirdest zoo ever.
So far, this season of Rick and Morty has been one of the show’s all-time best. While the fact that this is the third time the writers have touched upon incest, it doesn’t distract much from the fact that this is hilarious. Rick and Jerry adventure, Rick and Jerry episode for life!
I Give “Final DeSmithation” a 4.5/5
