Mashima Continues to Find New Ways to Torture Us

Edens Zero Chapter 160 Review/Recap
Time after time, Edens Zero has proven to be the darkest work of Hiro Mashima to date. We’ve seen the heroes be put through immense mental torture, suffer great loss, and in one timeline, we saw Shiki die! Well, that trend is about to, unfortunately, continue. This week, Mashima may have just sent several more named characters to their deaths.

Recap

Having learned that Creed’s really a part of the Shogunate family of her homeworld, Homura begins to beg him for forgiveness for being so rude to him. Creed won’t hear of it, though. In his time traveling the universe, he’s learned how outdated and backward their homeworld is, and thus wishes to change it for the better. Having heard that, Homura finally agrees to help him destroy the All-Link system. However, the two are then cornered by Jesse, who’s furious due to Homura’s affiliation with Elsie Crimson.

In the midst of the space battle above, the tide continues to turn against Shura’s forces. That’s when this giant sea serpent shows up and starts blasting the Hell out of everything. As a result of that, Oasis loses several of its members in the process.

Back on the planet below, Jesse refuses to stand down, despite Creed’s orders. Then, in a manic state, Jesse accidentally shoots Creed in the chest. With his (seemingly) dying breath, Creed confesses his love for Homura before meeting his end, much to the two’s horror.

Review
Mashima, what the heck!?!? I was just starting to like Creed, and then you go off and apparently kill him like this! And at the hands of Jesse, no less! I had no strong or negative feelings towards him before, but now? Seeing him refuse to listen to reason and refuse to accept the fact that he just committed manslaughter, I hate the little guy. If Creed’s really dead, then he deserves what I hope will come to him in the near future.
As for Oasis, I was saddened to see several of its members die. Granted, we had no emotional attachment to them, but that’s not the point. The point that Mashima’s making is that anyone can die at this stage of the saga. We’re lucky that none of the heroes have died right now. However, as Shiki puts it, so long as they’re still around, those who are dead are never truly gone. Wise words, Demon King Shiki. Wise words, indeed.

I Give “Scattering in the Starry Aoi Sea” a 3/5
