Edens Zero Chapter 149 Review/Recap
It may be because I’m revisiting the story thanks to the anime, but I’m only now realizing just how dark and messed up Edens Zero can be. Every arc in the story has had at least one moment that could be considered completely messed up. And if I’m being honest, I’m still haunted by Drakken Joe killing Shiki, as well as Muller’s torturing of Jinn and Sylph. However, I think I may have just found another seriously dark moment in the series thus far, and it has to do with Rebecca. Rebecca glimpses into a future where she loses her legs!!!
Having found themselves completely at Nasseh’s mercy, Rebecca and Weisz have no clue how to counter his powers. As a result, they’re left powerless when he basically Geass’ them to kill themselves. Fortunately, the forced suicide gets put on hold as Lyra shows up and demands that her comrade hand over Rebecca. Nasseh complies, and Rebecca’s taken away while Weisz gets left to die.
Except Weisz doesn’t die. He figured out that Nasseh’s powers aren’t hypnosis; he just messes with a person’s Ether to make them do what he says. Thus, he activated his Arsenal Armor, cancelling out the Eye of Horus! It’s Arsenal Mk. II!
Too bad Nasseh responds with his own mech suit straight out of Marvel Comics.
Meanwhile, Lyra leads Rebecca to a dressing room, orders her to strip, and change into an unseen costume. However, Rebecca passes out for some reason. And when she wakes up, she’s met by an older Shiki and Master Noah. Noah then explains that her powers let her briefly travel into a possible future. The worst possible future. A future where Rebecca’s not only in a coma, but she lost her legs.
Sweet mercy, Mashima! You are determined to put the heroes through the absolute ringer in this story, aren’t you? You separate them from their loved ones, give them family members who are scumbags, and put them through all manner of psychological trauma. And now this? We see a future where Rebecca loses her legs (one of her best features,) and is rendered comatose? It’s insane how much torture they’ve been put through!
Like many of you, I’m left wondering how Rebecca could’ve lost her legs. However, I think this chapter already gave us a hint at how it could happen if the future isn’t changed. Lyra couldn’t help but admire how beautiful Rebecca’s legs were, and judging by the way she talks, this ‘show’ she wants to put Rebecca in is either going to be super-embarrassing or utterly sadistic. Possibly both. In other words, Lyra makes Rebecca lose her legs, and thus, lose Cat Leaper.
It goes without saying, but the heroes need Cat Leaper and its Deus ex Machina powers to survive. Sadly, we may have to wait to learn what could happen to Rebecca, as the next chapter pits Weisz against Nasseh. It’s like Iron Man vs. Iron Monger. I just hope it makes up for the emotional rollercoaster of this chapter.
I Give “Powers Lost” a 2.5/5. Loses points for Rebecca tripping for the Umpteenth Time. But points for grown-up Shiki
