My Hero Academia Season 5, Episode 10 Review

Do you guys know who Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, cited as a major influence when he created Izuku Midoriya. None other than the wall-crawler himself, Spider-Man. And it really shows; both start out as these nerdy kids that people look down on, only to become this incredibly inspiring heroes. However, the Spider-Man inspiration just kicked things up a notch. In the Last episode, we saw Deku suddenly manifest a new Quirk, courtesy of One For All’s ability to stockpile and pass on the Quirks of previous users. As a result, Deku’s got an even bigger arsenal of powers to draw from. As the fifth match of the Joint Training Session reaches its climax, though, he has to learn to control his powers, and fast!

Inner Spider-Man

Throughout much of the episode, Deku finds himself once again struggling to control his Quirk. After seeing how far he’s come with controlling his power, it’s saddening to see him revert to his earliest days in the first season, when he couldn’t control his power without breaking something. However, thanks to his resolve, he not only manages to regain control of his power, he shows an incredible amount of control. In addition, the sight of him using his new Quirk, Blackwhip, to catch these metal pipes as he fights Shinso is very much something that we’d expect Spider-Man to do.

In the end, Class 1-A scores an incredible victory of 5-0. Class 1-B gave it their all, but they still couldn’t beat them. Thus, Class 1-A ultimately wins the Joint Training Session. The only one who’s left glum, though, is Shinso, as he thinks he failed to impress everyone and get into the Hero Course. Spoiler Alert: he did. Congratulations, Shinso. You’re going to be joining the other and train to become a Hero!

As this marks the end to the Joint Training Arc, I have to admit, I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. It gave us the chance to see just how strong the cast has gotten since joining UA. Which is a good thing, too, because given what’s in store for them on the horizon, they will need all the strength they can get.

The manga readers will know what I’m talking about. Until then, though, we’ve got the aftermath to look forward to. GO BEYOND, PLUS ULTRA!

  1. This arc was able to hold my interest more in the anime than the manga. Though I did like the manga version of events.
Now that we got this arc out of the way…….
